WHY YOU SHOULD OWN A PET

We've looked at some good reasons why people should own a pet.

1. Pets help to battle depression.

So many seniors and people who live alone deal with difficult situations. Loneliness robs folks of an interest in life and depression often results. The affection that a beloved pet gives helps people feel better and helps them feel secure.

2. Pets help prevent heart disease

It has been shown by research that the companionship of a faithful pet frequently provides the pet owner with a sense of psychological stability. This gives the person some protection from heart disease.

3. Stress can be reduced by a faithful pet

Walking your pet relaxes you and helps calm your nerves. It has been shown by studies done that stressful situations are less on pet owners and most especially on men, than people who do not have a pet.

4. High Blood Pressure can be lowered by owning a pet

Studies completed at a University in New York discounted that people suffering with high blood pressure who owned or adopted a pet (cat or dog) experienced lower blood pressure in stressful situations than the people who did not have a cat or dog

5. Health care expenses are less for pet owners

According to a report from the National Institute of Health, pet owners visit the doctor less frequently especially for serious medical problems.

Enjoy your pets. They are helping you to live longer.

GO FOR IT, GET A DOG!

SAMSON

If you've thought about purchasing a pet, consider doing it.

I'd like to tell you why I stated the above. When I was 18 months old, I was bitten by our neighbor's dog. Needless to say, I was terrified. The fear lived in me in adulthood. I'd cross the street if I saw a dog to avoid contact.

I married a great guy, had 2 children and was pregnant with our third child when my sister offered us a puppy. The puppy was 6 weeks old and fit in my husband's hand.

Can you imagine my dilemma? My husband loved dogs. Our children fell completely in love with the puppy. My husband would not force a decision on me. He asked me to consider. The kids made all kinds of promises , I'll walk him, I'll feed him and I'll play with him etc.

I decided I'd need time to decide. After two sleepless nights, I decided to say yes. We named him after his father, Sam, and called him Samson.

When my husband and children returned home with Samson, I tried hard to hold him. However, fear took over and I just couldn't hold him.

Time passed and Samson grew. My husband and children took care of him. I watched him perform little tricks. Without realizing it, I was beginning to love Samson. He was cute, a mixed breed, mostly beagle. He was brown and white with a saddle image on his back. He'd back up to wherever I was so I could pet him. I know he sensed my fear and tried to
help me relax. Gradually, he became "my dog". I loved him as much as others did. I trained him, walked him and did things for him that I never envisioned doing. We became buddies.

When our baby was born, he'd lie under the coach. No one was allowed near her unless Sam was reassured that it was safe.

Life continued for us. Sam became a part of our family. However, one of our girls developed frequent allergy attacks and repeated bouts of bronchitis. Our pediatrician questioned me. We both came to the painful decision that our child was allergic to Sam.

Our family needed to keep Sam in our basement until we found a good home. The process of getting the dog dander removed from our home and finding a home for Sam kept us busy. Reality set in the day that my husband took Sam to a farm with other dogs. Sam loved to run and play so that helped us somewhat.

I still cannot believe how attached I became to Samson.

As long as your family is allergy free I encourage you to get a dog. Dogs contribute so much to the family. Samson contributed much to our family. We remember him, tell stories about him and laugh at his antics.
